And dammit. I want one.
Way back when, in part of hubby's "sell strategy" to get me out of the city and up to the boondocks, he promised that I could get a dog once we finally had a yard.
He conveniently forgets this promise now. Citing our aging cats as the main reason he doesn't want another animal in the house ("mucking it up" as he says).
I'm now at the point that I don't care what the cats think (they, with the hair and the litter and the eating of the grass and puking it on our carpet and arghhhhhhhhhhhh!)... I want a lovable, cuddly, happy, friendly, playful dog. I work from home 3 days a week. I could walk it, love it and call it George.
Hmmmmm.... our weekend may have just turned into a quick trip to the nearest shelter.
I'll keep you updated...

Dogs can be great. But, take it from someone who's had two dogs + one kid and one dog + two kids: 1) Don't get two; and 2) They're *a lot* of work.
Just be prepared, that's all I'm saying. :D
I always put Caesar away when other kids are over, but he is AMAZING with both kids and I couldn't imagine our family without him. Even when we had 2,they both were so good with Izzy. I only put him away now because he's not used to multiple crazy kids mauling him and I don't want to freak any other kids out if he gets all excited. I can't imagine not having a dog. It's nice that at least someone is super happy when you walk in the door at night. :)
So....did you get one?
So happy to hear you're going to a shelter, too. I highly, highly recommend getting an older, already-potty-trained dog like we did with Spencer. Because a puppy is just like having a newborn. And are you ready for that?
(Plus older dogs are tamer, more laid back, and really, really need forever homes.)
I agree with Freckles, though: They are a LOT of work. Another child really. Can't just fill up the food and water and leave for a few days.
Yep - that's the thought I'm having re: getting an older dog. And yes, there are some SAD stories of why there are older dogs in the shelters. Anyways, I want to wait until Maddie gets older to really enjoy the experience of a puppy (so yes, we'll eventually have 2 dogs - because that to me is normal - having a "big" and a "little" dog).
So no, haven't got one yet. Trying to find an older lab / mix that will be good with cats + kids. Oh, and still trying to convince the hubby that this isn't the worst idea he's ever heard of. Maybe not this weekend, but definitely will have a new member of our family before summer is out!
